One of the most basic exercises for me is walking barefoot. It’s something we humans have done for millions of years and only in the nearest past of ‘western civilized life’ have almost stopped doing. You don´t have to go to any great effort to do it. All I would recommend you do is get outside, somewhere natural, take your shoes and socks off and begin to walk!

Instead of tuning in to nature and enjoying the vast benefits of being one with nature we’ve built an aritficial environment on the world and have long conditioned ourselves to think we have to protect ourselves from nature. In this civilised world we also need to protect our feet from contact with the ground.

Walking barefoot earths us!

Walking barefoot on two feet is not only one of our oldest and most basic capabilities, it is also an important health factor. Walking barefoot is more than feeling the grass beneath our feet. When we walk barefoot on natural ground our feet act as a conductor between us and the earth. Any imbalance in the way our body has become charged by electro-smog, every day business and other tension is released back into the earth. We become earthed. The negative electromagnetic charge of the earth tunes our own field and body to part of the earth again and we move back to really being rooted to our mother planet. This practice is very healing for us, it balances us and keeps us healthy, drawing unnecessary tension out of us and allowing us to vibrate with mother earth.
Barefoot walking has other benefits as well. Without the unnatural support of modern shoes our feet become strong in a natural way, so does the spine because all the muscles surrounding and supporting it keep having to re-align us to keep us in balance. Our brain is encouraged to work faster because it has to react to the constantly changing surface we walk on to keep us walking upright, that means our brain has to stay very flexible. Last but not least the ever changing surface of the earth stimulates different areas of our feet with every step, this stimulation affects our inner organs in a positive way.

If you feel you are an absolute beginner don´t seek excuses; you don’t have to be a barefoot trail-runner to do this. Get your self a minimum of 20 minutes time, find a place with natural ground and a natural surrounding, take your shoes and socks off and that’s about it. You can walk around on the lawn at your local park, in the woods or your back yard. If you find walking around to prickly at first just stand there or sit on a rock or beneath a tree with your bare feet on the ground. Please switch your mobile phone off and leave your MP3-player at home. Just tune in to your breath and nature around you. The more often you practice, the more flowing you will get.
