Off track – into the heart of nature

Hey Wild One, welcome to my blog again and to a new post. A few days ago I was out roaming again, as I often am. This time I really didn’t want to see anybody, I just wanted to spend some nature time on my own. And I did a good job going about it. All I had to do was get right off the paths, right off track, to enter a partially almost jungle like world…

… a world that no human ever seems to move through. But why? .. Too wet, too wild. too far off track, too uncomfortable…
To be honest, although I wish there were many more people who got out in nature like this to enjoy and find healing, I am usually perfectly happy with the fact that I can get right out of this world just by going a few metres farther than most. I love this kind of uncomfortable roam. These explorative outings are the best for me, whether I’m out in the woods, surrounded by thousands of acres of nature, or behind the scenes of a sub-urban recreation area. You can almost always move around without meeting a single human soul.

Because of the heavy rainfalls we’ve had lately the meadows near the Rhine are lightly flooded, there is quite a bit of water everywhere, for plant and animal life times are rich. I must have seen a hundred frogs jump away as they heard me coming, and a grass snake, seven or eight deer, a turtle in one of the canals, hares, storks and two kestrels. And of course loads of insects.
There was me in the heart of nature. The best way for me to clear my mind. I can sincerely recommend getting off track. I crossed boggy meadows, sneaked through woodland, waded through muddy canals, as if I were in the jungle somewhere. It gave me a wail of a time inclusive the feeling of being right there where nature happens.

Armed with a pair of shorts, light-weight close to bare-foot shoes and a small rucksack with some water and my camera gear, there I was. For anyone wanting to dare out and off track a pair of old sneakers will do. After all it’s this kind of moving we’re made for. Imagine a group of our hunter-gatherer ancestors letting their prey run away, following it with hungry eyes, because there wasn’t a path going in that direction. Hard cheese!
Let’s get back into some natural habits. They are so much fun.
