The truth about bunnies and Easter..
Happy Easter all you followers and visitors! I adore this time of year, when the light really returns and the sun’s power is noticeably stronger.
While most of those who are celebrating at all seem to be very focussed on a human son of God being killed and then arising back to life within three days, Easter has probably been around for a lot longer.
One very old festivity is Ostara, a celebration in honour of the Goddess of spring. It always takes place on the first full moon after spring equinox, so when the power of the moon is still rising and the sun is stronger than the night. Christianity has always tried to adapt old pagan celebrations to their intent, but this time they even had to accord to the moon’s cycles and wait for the first spring full moon. The only difference in the date is that they had to place their Easter ceremonies on the Sunday after full moon to keep up to their standards. But really this way they miss out on the intent of tuning in to the growing power of the waxing moon and the new born sun, all it needs to make the earth fertile and abundant again.
Then of course the Easter Bunny and all the chocolate eggs, and all this mixed up with Christian tales of dying and living. What they all have in common is, that they celebrate the transformation of death into life, the Christians celebrate Jesus’ resurrection and the pagans and others celebrate the triumph of spring life over winter death, of life coming out of the cradle of the underworld and beginning to manifest on the surface of the earth.
The egg is an ancient symbol of life just about to sprout. Eggs are a perfect picture of renewal and life. Then there is the Easter bunny, the march hare, fertile and dancing, mating and generating life. So let’s celebrate Easter as a celebration of life as such, no matter what our religious or non religious ideas are. For me it is the time of year in which I can become one with all around me instead of having to protect myself from the cold.
I love this beginning of spring. Below a short vid of my first run in shorts this year and a few words on spring.
Get outside and move to your roots!
