Reflecting on my ketogenic diet experiment after holidays

Isn’t it just great, when you manage to get away for a few days every now and again?! Last week, we were on a few days holiday out in some great German woodland. We booked a hotel apartment with a little kitchen in it, with breakfast and dinner in the hotel, where there is always a great buffet with a good choice for just about anybody.

We had a great time and went for walks in the woods, spent time on the playground, and on one and a half rainy days, we had a great time in the swimming pool and visited an aerial museum where Artur was allowed to sit in the cockpit of a real glider. We spent a day in a huge wild-life park, where we saw wolves and bison, Elks and lynx.

If you’ve been following my articles, you probably will remember that for four weeks before our holiday, I was on a “keto experiment”. Keto what..? I tried a strictly ketogenic diet out for a few weeks, meaning that I ate loads of fats, way more than I usually would, vegetable fats and animal fats, saturated and unsaturated. So I ate avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, cod liver for breakfast, mackrels, fat meats, bacon and more. After fat comes a moderate amount of protein. Moderate because This keto diet is about getting your body to burn fat to generate a constant high energy level, instead of burning glucose out of carbs, that constantly make your Insuline rise and fall, and give off fast energy, that is used up again almost straight away.

Burning fat is a much more efficient source of energy and generating it leaves no unnecessary waste in our bodies. As we always carry body fat around with us, we always have something to burn, so have constant high energy and don’t get hungry. To enable our glucose loving brains to access this fatty energy, our body produces ketones that the brain can burn for energy. Also they are measurable in our urine, so we can check whether we are in ketosis or not. It’s the ketones that give this diet it’s name.

When we eat a large amount of protein, our metabolism turns it into glucose, so our body stops burning fat again and goes for the sugar.

Last come the carbs. On my diet I had no more than a handful of broccoli or cauliflower a day. That I ate with olive oil and ghee (ghee doesn’t belong to the paleo diet, but I wanted to get all the benefits out of the experiment).
